Unit Quiz

1 Quick Explanation 1–3 min

Domestic territory defines WHERE production happens; normal resident defines WHO owns the income.

Together they separate 'domestic' concepts (GDP, NDP) from 'national' concepts (GNP, NNP).

2 Detailed Notes

Definition

Domestic territory (economic territory)

The economic territory of a country includes: (1) political frontiers, (2) ships and aircraft owned by residents operating outside, (3) embassies, consulates and military bases abroad, (4) fishing vessels, oil rigs in international waters. Note: foreign embassies INSIDE India are NOT part of India's domestic territory.

Definition

Normal resident

A person or institution whose centre of economic interest lies in the domestic territory and who ordinarily resides there for one year or more. Residents include citizens working abroad if their centre of interest is India. Non-residents include foreign tourists, foreign embassies' staff, and Indians working abroad permanently.

Key idea

Why this matters

  • GDP = output within domestic territory, by residents and non-residents.
  • GNP = GDP + NFIA (net factor income from abroad).
  • NFIA = income of residents from abroad − income of non-residents within domestic territory.

Comparison

Classification examples

SituationDomestic territory?Normal resident?
An Indian firm operating in DubaiNoYes (Indian resident)
A US company's factory in IndiaYes (within India)No (non-resident)
Indian embassy in LondonYes (part of India)Yes
Foreign tourist in India for 3 monthsYesNo

Important

Exam trap

Production inside India by a foreign firm counts in India's GDP but not in its GNP (income goes abroad). That difference is captured by NFIA.

In One Minute

Domestic territory = where production occurs (incl. embassies & ships abroad). Normal resident = centre of economic interest in the country for a year+. GDP is domestic; GNP adds NFIA.

Important for Exam

  • ⭐ Inclusions/exclusions in domestic territory — very common MCQ.
  • ⭐ NFIA definition and numericals (3 marks).
  • ⭐ Difference between domestic and national income.
  • ⭐ Tourists, embassies, residents working abroad — classify correctly.
