Comparison

Key idea
Tax vs Non-tax revenue
- Tax revenue: direct (income tax, corporate tax) + indirect (GST, customs, excise).
- Non-tax revenue: interest & dividends, fees, fines, license fees, grants-in-aid.
- Taxes are compulsory; fees are for a service.
Formula
Direct vs indirect tax
Direct: incidence & impact on same person (income tax).
Indirect: incidence shifted to another (GST, excise). The test: can the tax burden be shifted to someone else? If yes → indirect.
Important
Exam trap
'Recovery of loans' is a CAPITAL receipt (reduces asset), while 'interest on loans given' is REVENUE (income). Don't mix the principal with the interest.
In One Minute
Revenue receipts: no liability, no asset reduction (taxes, fees, interest). Capital receipts: liability created (borrowings) or asset reduced (disinvestment, loan recovery).
