Definition
What is National Income?
National Income is the sum of the money value of all final goods and services produced by the normal residents of a country during a year. In CBSE terms it is NNP at Factor Cost.
Key idea
Domestic income
- Domestic income = value of final goods produced within the domestic territory (regardless of who produces it).
- National income = domestic income + net factor income from abroad (NFIA).
- NFIA = factor income earned by residents from abroad β factor income earned by non-residents within India.
Formula
Formula chain
NNPfc = NDPfc + NFIANet National Product at Factor Cost (national income) = net domestic product at factor cost plus net factor income from abroad.
Key idea
The three identities
- Output approach: GDP = Ξ£ value of final output.
- Income approach: GNP = sum of factor incomes.
- Expenditure approach: GDP = C + I + G + (X β M).
- All three must give the same answer in theory.
In One Minute
National income = NNP at factor cost = value of all final goods & services produced by normal residents in a year = domestic income + NFIA.
Important for Exam
- β NFIA is the bridge between domestic and national concepts.
- β 'Money value of final goods' β never count intermediate goods.
- β NNPfc is the official definition of National Income.
- β Chain: GDP β GNP β NNP, and MP β FC (we do these later).
